Dishforth weekend

Saturday ran true to form, with gloomy conditions. Short tasks were set and Dick Cole set off on the Pundits' 107 Km triangle, only to return after about 15 Km. Everyone else sensibly stayed local, so no contest.

Sunday amazed us all; a weekend, 2008 season, Interclub league, sunshine? Something wrong here surely.

Director Paul Whitehead set some tasks, 204 Km for Pundits, 152 for Intermediates, 131 for Novices. Unfortunately as we launched sea air approached almost cutting off the route to the first turning point.

In the event four pundits set off on task, with two (Nigel Howes from Camphill and Malcolm Winter in the Sutton Bank DG1000) finishing. Dick Brisbourne (Rufforth) and Grinner Smith (Dishforth/Bowland) did most of it, but had problems at the last turning point. Unfortunately the Sutton Bank team had electrical problems, with a logger failure on the second leg, so they were only scored to that point.

The Novice class saw a very creditable effort from Gary(?) Vaughan (sorry, missed your first name from the log- e-mail me if I'm wrong). He turned both turning points and landed near Easingwold, for over 100 Km.

None of the Intermediates made the first turning point, making it no contest for them.

Remaining meetings

Having failed to get a contest day out of either of the first two meetings, your captains have decided that we will activate the reserve weekend, and it will be at Pocklington. So remaining meetings this year are:

There is an intention to hold a closing barbecue at Pocklington- watch this space.

Pocklington- no better

Anyone see those newspaper pictures of Sutton Bank "basking in the sun" while the south and midlands got heavily rained on? What they didn't mention was the 30 knot wind- and Pocklington got the same, with less sunshine.

We did actually fly on Saturday, in fact some of us (OK one of us) attempted the task. Dick Brisbourne finished up in a field having just failed to make it to Y. Everyone else was more sensible.

Sunday and Monday saw winds of 40 kt + at flying heights, which precluded any sort of task.

Sutton Bank weekend

Well, the weather didn't pick up: we were stuck with a stubborn though weakening front lying north-south over most of Britain. It rained on Sunday, Saturday and Monday were actually quite pleasant- if you were doing anything that didn't need rising air..

The only notable bit of flying was by Mike Armstrong who grabbed the short thermal window on Saturday to get round the organisers' "fun" task of around 75 KM across the moors. Mike also made the best performance on the simulator on Sunday.

One down, three to go.

Captains and Committee

Here's who to see at your club if you're interested in competing:

The committee has changed: after several years of sterling service Rob Nichols has finally retired; we still look forward to seeing him as a competitor. The current team is:

Chairman: Dick Brisbourne (Rufforth)

Treasurer: Pam Shuttleworth (Rufforth)

Scorers: Dick Brisbourne (Rufforth), Chris Teagle (Sutton Bank)
